I'm a Camp I'm a Parent

Bernie Moore Scholarship

The Connecticut Camping Association has established the Annual Bernie Moore CCA Scholarship to provide assistance to students pursuing a career in the field of camping, recreation, outdoor education, or related field.

Bernie Moore was the consummate Camp Director. Her spirit stays with all who worked for her – and a multitude whose lives were touched by her. Bernie believed in the vital necessity of camp as a part of every summer in every child’s life. She would do just about anything to make camp a possibility for anyone who wanted to go.

As a founding member of Connecticut Camping Association, Bernie helped to begin an organization dedicated to children’s well-being while they are at camp. While Connecticut Camping Association has worked with the state health department, it has also allowed camp directors from around Connecticut, regardless of their camp origins, be it for profit or not-for profit, agency or not. Connecticut Camping Association has given camping professionals a place to learn more about the camping industry.  Bernie was one to have the forethought that this would be essential to so many in the business of camping.

Bernie directed Camp Maria Pratt in Torrington for the Girl Scouts. She began the program at Camp Workcoeman, a Boy Scout camp in New Hartford – all while raising four children. Bernie was a wonderful role model for so many. Over the course of her career of more than 35 years, she touched thousands of girls’ lives, several of whom followed her path in professional Girl Scouting.  Bernie was known for her hugs and the fact that she could remember every girl who ever went to Maria Pratt. Bernie made every girl feel like she was the most important person in Bernie’s universe – and there were hundreds of girls each summer attending Maria Pratt!

Bernie was a hero to all who knew her. At her Memorial Service, many young women spoke of the important role Bernie played in their lives. She helped so many to find themselves as they grew into women she appreciated and encouraged to reach beyond themselves and give back to their communities and to younger girls growing up. She touched the lives of so many and made so many the women they became!

The scholarship was set up as a way to honor her memory. Those chosen to receive it are dedicated to the lives of young people through camping and recreation, or a field related to working with children.

The amount of this annual scholarship will be $500.00.
